Hargreaves Lansdown launches Menstruation and Menopause Policy

WEALTH management company Hargreaves Lansdown which has its HQ in Bristol has launched its first dedicated Menstruation and Menopause Policy.

The policy aims to raise awareness and understanding of these issues which affect half of the adult population, outline the support available and foster an environment in which their staff can openly and comfortably instigate conversations about menstruation and the menopause.

Menstruation and the menopause directly impact 50% of the population and can have a significant impact on wellbeing, performance and confidence, but continue to be widely seen as taboo and rarely discussed in workplaces.

According to the NHS, three out of four women experience symptoms of the menopause, while one in four experience serious symptoms.

As part of HL’s commitment to provide an inclusive and supportive working environment this policy explains potential symptoms, acknowledging that the subject is personal and unique to the individual, and encourages colleagues to feel comfortable discussing any symptoms with their line manager.

The policy provides information on the responsibilities of colleagues and managers around this issue. Support available to colleagues is also outlined, including flexible working adjustments, access to shower facilities and free sanitary products in HL offices.

Alison Wright, who is a member of HL's gender diversity committee said:

“We are really proud to be launching our menstruation and menopause policy in order to normalise taboo conversations which impact everyone – directly or indirectly.

"Studies have shown that there is a spike in the number of women aged 45-55 leaving the workplace due to the hidden symptoms of menopause such as reduced confidence and increased anxiety.

"And at least 80% of women experience period pains every month, so it’s incredibly important that we support and educate, so that people understand the impact on colleagues and ensure that the workplace is a  safe space to talk openly.”
