TGt Meets IWD Special…Emily Cottle of Bath College
In celebration of International Women's Day, we heard from Bath College's Emily Cottle. Read on to learn about her career and thoughts on IWD this year.
Tell us a bit about yourself …
I hold the position of Head of Inclusion, Foundation & Alternative Provision at Bath College. My journey here began 7 years ago when I joined as an Early Years Lecturer.
Outside of work, I reside in Bath with my husband, three children, cat, and dog. My leisure time is primarily spent with my family and friends, enjoying beach trips, new books, and occasionally indulging in a cocktail or two.
What do you love most about your job?
Witnessing our learners overcome obstacles to pursue their dreams is the most rewarding part of the job. Observing our team guide young individuals, nurturing their confidence, and honing transferable skills that will empower them on their new path is incredibly rewarding.
What is your proudest achievement?
Balancing parenthood with pursuing education, I found myself re-taking my GCSEs in my twenties. I diligently worked towards a degree and eventually earned my PGCE, resulting in the position I hold today.
This year’s IWD theme is ‘Inspire Inclusion’ – what does this mean to you?
To me, the theme "Inspire Inclusion" for International Women's Day signifies a call to actively promote diversity and equity in all aspects of life. It's about celebrating the unique perspectives, talents, and contributions of women from all backgrounds and ensuring that everyone feels valued, respected, and included.
What are the biggest challenges you have faced in your career?
Juggling the responsibilities of motherhood alongside advancing in my career and striving for excellence in both areas has been a challenging but fulfilling journey. I am grateful for the support of my family, which has played a crucial role in my success. I am acutely aware of the privilege I have in having such a strong support system, as it has enabled me to navigate the demands of motherhood and career with greater ease and confidence.
How do you balance your business and personal life?
Balancing the demands of a challenging job can indeed be difficult, but I make a conscious effort to carve out time for myself and my family. I prioritise disconnecting from work to fully engage in quality time with loved ones and prioritise my own well-being.
Which women inspire you the most?
Every woman who persists in navigating life's hurdles while maintaining her determination to thrive!
