Let's Talk
TGt Meets... Micheal Healy
We've been chatting with The Whole Bagel owner, Michael Healy as part of our series of interviews with local business owners, to celebrate Bath's Independent Retailer month.
Describe your business in one sentence…
The Whole Bagel is Baths only Bagel Shop supplying quality food, to both Bath residents and tourists, on a daily basis.
Where is home and why?
Walcot Street. I love living centrally and Walcot Street, for me sums up all the best of Bath with its amazing mix of shops and places to eat and drink.
Why do you think it is important to have a month celebrating Bath’s Independent Retailers?
Bath has so much to offer from its independent sector, each business provides a niche and our passion for doing what we do is most certainly worth celebrating.
What inspired you to set up your business in Bath?
I moved to Bath at the age of 19 as a chef and left at the age of 25. As soon as I left I had the urge to come back. There is something very magical about Bath, both in its history and architecture. It took a while to make my way back but I now am very happy to call Bath my home once again.
What have been your key challenges and how have you overcome them?
Every day is a challenge running a business. However I have been very fortunate to have a strong team and some valuable members of staff that help me. The daily challenge is always to provide quality food with great customer service.
What do you think attracts people to Bath?
The history is foremost, but its mix of great hotels, restaurants and shops most certainly plays a huge part.
How do you like to spend your time off?
I like to run as often as I can.
Where is your favourite place to eat in Bath?
At the moment it’s got to be Corkage on Walcot Street. Every time I have visited I have had great Wine, amazing food and impeccable, relaxed service. I’ve also got to mention it’s an Independent.
Your phone book must be full of business contacts, but who is the most famous person in there?
Going to keep my lips sealed for this one, sorry.
What has been your biggest achievement to date?
I’d like to say I’m still achieving, but the birth of my son is number one plus running a successful business for the last 9 years rates up there.
