Recipe: Spiced nuts

Perfect party nibbles; make your own spiced mixed nuts with this easy to follow recipe. If you're addicted to store-bought spiced nuts, you'll be thrilled to see how simple they are to make!

These nuts are coated in a blend of spices called Baharat, which comes from the Middle East. They only take a few minutes and are delicious with drinks.

Ingredients:

  • 200g of mixed nuts (e.g cashews, almonds, pistachios etc)
  • 30g salted butter
  • 2 tsp dark muscavado sugar
  • 1tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • ¼ tsp cayenne
  • ¼ tsp ground coriander
  • 2 cardamom pods
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • ½ tsp ground cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp ground ginger

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 180c/gas 4

2. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper

3. Put the butter in a bowl and melt in the microwave for about 30 seconds

4. Grind the seeds from the cardamom pods to a fine powder in a pestle and mortar

5. Add all the spices to the hot butter and stir well

6. Put the nuts in a large bowl, then pour over the spicy butter

7. Stir well, so that all the nuts are coated in the butter

8. Spread the nuts out on the baking tray, trying to separate them as much as possible

9. Bake in the oven for 8-10mins

10. Allow to cool thoroughly so that the coating hardens, then break the nuts up with your fingers and serve
