REVIEW: The Pump Room

It began with luxury. We were seated next to the historic Roman Baths and were greeted with a glass of smooth, sparkling champagne; it was enough to make us feel as if we had stepped foot into a period movie.

Crystal chandeliers hung elegantly above us, as all eyes fixated on the wonderful pianist. Star-struck lovers, family members and friends all arrived that evening to escape reality and relax the night away.   

If champagne wasn’t enough to make two ladies happy, then wait until you hear about the food. Whilst we gazed at the evening menu, a basket of warm, home-made bread and butter was laid in front of us by the uniformed waiting staff. My friend looked at me with a delighted smile and said “wow, this is such a diverse menu”, which is just what you want to see as a vegetarian. There was also the appealing cocktail menu, as we ordered a winter garden cocktail and a pomegranate mimosa – they were sweet, refreshing and made our evening that little bit more special.  

The Colston basset blue and leak tart with mustard grain dressing was the chosen starter for my friend, which she described as ‘cosy’, ‘delicious’ and the ‘perfect portion’. Whereas, I went for the creamy Jerusalem artichoke soup, accompanied by truffle oil and rye croutons. It was the perfect dish to begin with, as we both agreed that they were light enough to move onto a main and dessert.  

While I can appreciate a good steak, I rarely order it as much as I desire. So, as soon as I saw it on the menu, I took my chance. Presented to me was a 14-day aged steak, poured over with garlic sauce (or peppercorn – each to their own), served with chunky chips and rocket salad. Whereas my friend had chosen the roast squash and kale gnocchi with leak and sage sauce. She expressed, “this really is the nicest gnocchi I’ve had in a while”.  

Clearly undefeated, we both agreed on two desserts to sweeten our palette. In a matter of minutes, they arrived. Sticky toffee pudding with vanilla bean ice cream and the apple crumble tart with cinnamon cream ­– yes, they were just as delightful as they sound. A few chats later and the observation of two birthday celebrations, we ordered a coffee each and shared some truffles.  

Although our evening came to an end, we still reminisce about the elegance, the history and the amazing October Dining Menu. We can’t wait to return for The Pump Room Candlelight Festive Dining. Who’s coming too?
