Bath Bachfest 2025

Bath Bachfest 2024 will take place from: 19th to 22nd February 2024. The annual Bath Bachfest, now in its seventh year, is a delightful fixture in the Georgian city’s annual calendar, celebrating the music of J S Bach and his contemporaries.

Happy music lovers, full houses and enthusiastic critics confirmed the success of this year’s festival, with another reviewer summing it up neatly: ‘once again artistic director Amelia Freedman managed to fill the three days of the fest with five wonderfully varying first class soloist and groups bringing the music of J S Bach and his contemporaries vividly alive.’

As Bach’s music is interspersed with that of Vivaldi, Rameau, Purcell and others, so the festival welcomes the internationally acclaimed and familiar alongside the new. Pianist Angela Hewitt needed no introduction and La Serenissima transported its audience once again from Bath to Venice with a performance described as ‘music with a smile on its face’. Onyx Brass and the viol consort, Fretwork (performing here with fine soprano Ruby Hughes), made their Bath debuts and instant friends in the city, too.

The English Concert, directed from the harpsichord by Francesco Corti, brought the closing concert in Bath Abbey to an exuberant, up-beat finale with a rousing performance of Bach’s first Brandenburg Concerto. Bright, and guaranteed to lift spirits indeed!
