TGt Meets...Luisa Omielan BAFTA breakthrough act winner
Meet our latest TGt Meets...Luisa Omielan, BAFTA breakthrough act winner. Luisa speaks all about her new tour 'God is a Woman' which is coming to Komedia Bath on Wednesday 17th November.
When did you realise you wanted to become a comedian?
Ahh I realised I already was one when I saw people getting on stage, making people for money. I was like OHHH, im an idiot like that, I love performing, and stand up is just the official name for it.
What can individuals who are seeing your show for the first time expect?
Expect to laugh and cry a little bit, I would hope it sparks a conversation, and makes people come out and want to have a conversation about life, death, love and religion. Expect a giant bernese mountain dog. And expect to see a stand up show that will be unlike any other stand up show you have ever seen.
Is there any comedians that you can think of that inspired you?
So many Robin Williams, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, John Candy, Bill Murray, Richard Pryor, Whoopi Goldberg
Being on a tour is there anything that has changed about your lifestyle?
Yes I have put on so much weight! In lockdown I was eating better, sleeping regular hours, I even went t gym classes! Touring turns me into a slug! You can hear all about this in my new podcast Notes on Tour, which is available on all podcast platforms now.
Has anything changed or improved in your routines over the past few years?
Haha I would hope so! My routines change every year, obviously some classics remain, but its growth isn’t it. Comedy is about what I see and feel about life, so hopefully what I was talking about at 25 is different to 37, I would hope it was anyhow. I have done shows about Beyonce, Thigh gaps, suicide, depression, eating disorders, cannabis oil, cancer, euthanasia, inequality and religion. SO yeah, my comedy evolves.
What in your opinion is the biggest successes you’ve had as a comedian so far?
I think longevity, and being able to perform live shows consistently to an audience that want to see them. And to have built a following that supported me in Lockdown through Patreon. That was a huge indication of my success, that actually in the worst times, the audiences have always had my back.
What advice would you give to someone looking to pursue a career as a comedian?
Depends what you want, in the early days play the game, art is beautiful but comics are a commodity so if you want to get on tv play the game, but if you don’t like conforming, then be truthful and pure and honest with your work, follow your gut and do what feels like the right decision in the moment, but know it wont necessary lead to financial security but to artistic authenticy. Which is wonderful but doenst pay the bills so find a way to do both.
What’s next in your journey as a comedian?
Well I am currently touring and recording the Notes on Tour podcast, I am hoping to develop a sitcom and next year is my ten year anniversary of perfomring Stand up shows, ten years since I launched What Would Beyonce Do?! So watch this space as I have special shows planned for next year.
