Marvellous Maths masterclass at Royal High School Bath
Year 5 girls from seven primary schools in and around Bath attended a maths masterclass at Royal High School Bath on Saturday 9 March.
The 17 marvellous mathematicians representing schools who took part had a great time exploring binary monsters, pentominoes puzzles, reflection and rotational symmetry and more.
Led by Royal High School Bath’s Mathematics staff, the session was set up to raise confidence and achievement in maths for Year 5 girls. The teachers employed a variety of dynamic and creative techniques and resources to ensure the session was fun and engaging, encouraging the pupils to work both in teams and individually to solve maths problems in a variety of real word contexts. Mrs Ladbury-Webb, Head of Year 7, Teacher of Mathematics, said: “Our annual Maths Masterclass for Year 5 girls was a great success again this year. The event is by invitation only with attendees nominated by local primary schools. The interactive sessions are designed to encourage a passion for maths, and to give students an opportunity to explore concepts beyond the confines of the primary curriculum. Our hope is that the children taking part have fun practising problem solving and teamwork and go home feeling inspired to share their enthusiasm for the world of maths with others.”
This is the second year Royal High School Bath has run a Maths masterclass for external schools, and the response has been so positive, the school is hoping to make it an annual event.
Royal High School Bath is a leading independent girls’ day and boarding school with a long history of specialising in girls’ education and a reputation for being kind, supportive as well as academically excellent. Maths is one of the most popular subjects at Royal High Bath, with over 50% of this year’s students choosing Maths as a Sixth Form subject. This is supported by research from the Girls' Schools Association in 2021 which revealed that when compared to peers at co-ed schools, pupils at girls' schools were twice as likely to take Maths A level and 2.5 times as likely to take Further Maths.
