Your Total Guide To lifestyle
The event aims to encourage local communities to embrace the benefits of an active lifestyle, offering free access to gyms, swimming sessions, and fitness classes across several locations.
National Fitness Day, now in its 13th year and led by UKActive, seeks to inspire people nationwide to get moving and experience the wide-ranging advantages of regular physical activity.
This year’s theme, “Your Health is Your Life,” emphasises the importance of staying active for both physical and mental well-being, while also promoting social engagement through shared activities.
As part of the celebrations, Better leisure centres—including Bath Sports and Leisure Centre, Culverhay Leisure Centre, and Keynsham Leisure Centre—are opening their doors to residents for a day of free fitness opportunities.
Activities available at no cost include access to gym facilities, swimming sessions such as Swim for All, Swim for Fitness, and Aqua-aerobics, as well as fitness classes like Tai Chi, Pilates, Group Cycle, and Dance Fitness.
This year’s focus is particularly on the benefits of swimming and water-based activities for mental and physical health, including rehabilitation. To further support this initiative, “Swim Doctor” Callem Goodman will be at Bath Sports and Leisure Centre at 2 pm, offering consultations for those interested in starting swimming, resuming after a break, or incorporating water-based exercises into their fitness routines.
Commenting on the initiative Barnaby Rich, Partnership Manager for GLL, the charitable social enterprise that operates Better leisure centres in Bath and North East Somerset said:
“It has never been more important for the public to embrace activity and fitness as an aid to mental and physical health.
“So we are delighted to join this year’s National Fitness Day Campaign -Health is For Life - in our leisure centres, gyms, studios and pools.
“No matter your state of fitness, taking small steps to be more active more often will have huge benefits throughout your life – and that journey could start on National Fitness Day when you try something new.”
In 2023, National Fitness Day saw the participation of an estimated 11 million people, including over four million children and young people.
