Bath’s World Heritage Day goes online

Bath will celebrate UNESCO World Heritage Day on Saturday 18 April with a host of virtual activities that people can join in with at home.

Families can find out why Bath is a World Heritage Site and have a go at fun art and craft activities and experiments on the City of Bath World Heritage website, www.bathworldheritage.org.uk/learning.

And grownups can test their World Heritage knowledge with themed quizzes on the website and on the Twitter page at @BathWHS.

World Heritage Day is marked internationally every April and is a chance for each World Heritage Site to promote its own special status and celebrate being part of the wider World Heritage family.

Councillor Paul Crossley, cabinet member for Community Services at Bath & North East Somerset Council, said: “We have held World Heritage Day celebrations in Bath every year since 2010. This year is different as we can’t welcome visitors to an event as we had planned, but we hope lots of people will celebrate with us by joining in with some of the special activities at home.”

There are six main reasons why Bath is a World Heritage Site: The Roman remains, the hot springs, 18th-century architecture, 18th-century town planning, the landscape setting of the city, and the way in which Georgian Bath helped create a more ordered and ‘polite’ society.

The family activities will reflect these six themes and will include: making a bubbly bath bomb, designing a Roman-inspired mosaic, planning your dream town centre, constructing a column, creating a cartoon strip of Bath characters, and painting the view from your house or garden.

Families can share their creations using the hashtag #WorldHeritageDayGoesDigital on Twitter (@BathWHS) or Facebook (BathWorldHeritageSite) or by emailing world [email protected]
