Sharron Davies Official Race Starter for Vitality Bath Half Marathon 2016
The organisers of the Vitality Bath Half Marathon 2016’s organisers have declared that Olympic medalist and television presenter Sharron Davies MBE is to be the official race starter for the iconic event on Sunday 13th March.
A local of the area as well as an enthusiastic promoter of the sports industry, Davies is a popular personality and a perfect headline figure for one of the UK’s most popular road races.
Sharron Davies is one of the country’s best known sportswomen, following a successful career as a professional swimmer in which she won an Olympic silver medal and two Commonwealth Games gold medals. Since retiring from the sport, she has become a television personality, a patron of various charities, a public speaker, devoted mother of three, model, author and equestrian. She has also been awarded the MBE by the Queen for services to sport.
Davies will be officially starting the Bath Half, as it is affectionately known, at 11am on 13th March. She will see 15,000 runners set off from Great Pulteney Street and complete the two-lap 13.1 mile course around the beautiful World Heritage Site of Bath.
The award-winning Vitality Bath Half Marathon is one of the most iconic and longest established races on the running calendar. It boasts a strong field of British elite runners and its fast and flat course makes it a great event in which to achieve a PB. Suitable for all abilities, it includes a popular Family Fun Run and an entertaining Battle of the Bands competition. Each year participants look forward to a day of sporting greatness, lively crowd support, record charity fundraising and a thrilling backdrop of music for runners and spectators alike.
Race Director Andrew Taylor said: “We are delighted to confirm Sharron Davies as official starter of the Vitality Bath Half Marathon 2016. Her incredible career has spanned over 30 years and she remains a true inspiration for young and old. We know that she will be warmly received at the race this year and it is a privilege to have her supporting what is set to be the most popular Bath Half Marathon yet.”
Half marathon entries for this year’s race closed several months ago. Entries for the 2017 race will open on Monday 14th March.
