Bath won the top spot in the medium-sized category for top UK cities and towns for a staycation, while Wells ranked highest in the small city category. Both cities received high scores for their attractions, outperforming all of the UK's capital cities in points.
The results are from a recent, nearly 4,000-member, survey conducted by Which? where members shared their experiences visiting UK cities and towns over the past two years. Each location was rated out of five stars based on accommodation, food and drink, cultural sights and tourist attractions, ease of getting around, lack of crowds, and value for money. These ratings were then averaged into a customer percentage score.
Bath received an impressive 82 percent rating. The city is renowned for its well-preserved Roman baths, the Georgian houses of the Royal Crescent, and its literary connections, especially the Jane Austen Centre.
Vicar’s Close, its cathedral and Bishop’s Place are some of the stand-out tourist attractions in Wells contributing to its recognition, despite being one of the UK's smallest cities. Wells is also notable for being the filming location of the Simon Pegg-fronted comedy police film Hot Fuzz, directed by Edgar Wright, who grew up in the area. Wells was further featured in projects like Poldark, Hellboy, and The Libertine.
Nearby Bath, an ancient city and UNESCO World Heritage site, was mentioned and commended by Which? for its cultural attractions, Roman architecture, food and drink offerings, and accommodation.
