TGt Meets...Katie Hodge, Founder of Katie J Yoga. We found out what inspired Katie to pursue a career in yoga and how practicing yoga has so many positive benefits to the mind and body!
Tell us a little bit about yourself…
I have worked as an event manager for the past 8 years, living in London, Melbourne, Sydney and now Bath. Due to the pandemic my event management role in Bath has come to an end. This has given me the opportunity to focus on growing my yoga business which was previously being built in my spare time. I have loved the challenge of becoming self-employed and growing and scaling my business.
What persuaded you to pursue a career in this industry?
I discovered yoga when living in Australia, it was a beach side studio that caught my eye, but it was the practice that kept me going back. Having suffered from anxiety most of my adult life yoga was the only thing that allowed my mind to calm, feeling a release of any worry or stress. I knew this was a gift and something that I wanted to pass onto others. Therefore when I got back to the UK in 2018 I decided to enrol in a yoga instructor course and have never looked back.
Are virtual yoga classes as effective as normal yoga classes?
Feedback shows that students have really enjoyed my virtual classes, and have asked for them to continue as lockdown lifts. I think they can be as effective as a normal yoga class, and have helped to maintain students mental and physical health during the pandemic.
Describe Bath in 3 words…
Historical, Vibrant, Home
How can your classes help those who are stressed or anxious?
In yoga we focus on the breath, which helps to bring us into the present moment. Being present allows us to enjoy the here and now, it stops the mind wondering to activities in the past or future which could cause stress and anxiety.
What is one of your favourite classes that you run?
Virtual Gentle Yoga on a Sunday morning at 10am. It’s the perfect time to have a stretch and relax giving time in your weekend for much needed self-care, all from the comfort of your home.
What do you enjoy doing when you are not busy at work?
I enjoy being in the countryside, going for long walks, especially by the coast. Having grown up in Devon I’m happiest when I’m by the sea.
What are the benefits of practising yoga?
I’ve written an article of the benefits of yoga, check it out HERE!
