TGtB Meets...Paul James
Bath Rugby prop Paul James chatted to TGtB about being a family man, his favourite places to visit in Bath and his words of wisdom for any emerging rugby stars of the future.
At what age did you first become interested in Rugby?
I was quite young, I think I was about 5 or 6 when I was first introduced to the sport. I started playing for my local village team and haven't looked back since.
What’s been the greatest highlight of your career so far?
Without a doubt, it was winning the Grand Slam with Wales.
Who do you cite as your sporting idol?
Although I play sport for a living, I don't actually watch a lot of sport truth be told. But one of my favourite players is a prop called Ryan Williams. I admire him as a player and think that he's good at what he does.
Who’s the biggest joker on the squad?
It's got to be Nathan Catt, he's a good lad and cracks me up.
Talk us through your personal fitness regime...
I might be a ripped up racing snake but I can't give away my secret.
What does your typical daily diet consist of?
I try my best to eat a balanced diet, but it can be tricky at times. I eat a lot of meat, carbs and salad. We're lucky enough to have a great team of chefs at Farleigh House, so me and the rest of the lads are always well looked after.
What are your favourite things to see and do in Bath? Do you have any recommendations for us?
There's plenty of lovely restaurants to dine at here in Bath, personally I like going to Victoria Park with my kids. They love to go and have a play up there, so we go there quite a bit.
How do you like to spend your time off?
I might come across as intimidating on the pitch but I'm a family man at heart, my days off are spent relaxing with my wife and two boys.
What advice would you give to any young, aspiring Rugby players?
Work hard in training and make sure that you enjoy it.
What's the most enjoyable or rewarding part of your job?
Running out at the Rec and winning - nothing rivals the feeling that me and the boys get winning at home.
