Bath cyclists embark across Ireland to raise money for Bath Rugby Foundation
A gruelling 710 km bike ride, spanning across Ireland, braving the conditions of the emerald isle; it's not for the faint hearted. Today 62 cyclists from Bath will be doing just that, setting off from Cork in the South of Ireland, bound for Giant's Causeway in the North.
The route will see them tackle coastal roads, bustling town centres, forests, mountains and moorlands – all in aid of a good cause.
The troop are made up of ex players, Bath Rugby corporate partners, keen cyclists and absolute beginners, and the ride will be the culmination of months of training and fundraising in aid of Bath Rugby Foundation.
The funds will allow the Foundation to continue to run their award winning programmes which aim to empower disadvantaged young people and give them the tools for a better future.
The team are on target to hit their target of £50,000 and if you are inspired by their efforts, opportunity to sponsor them can be found
here.
Bath Rugby Club President and ex Bath legend David Trick who has been part of the team organising the ride said: “Ever since January we've been pedalling the lanes of all of our neighbouring counties in an effort to get fit enough to not only complete the challenge but enjoy it as well.
"There's something special about an experience when a reasonable degree of discomfort (and fatigue) alongside some side-splitting laughter has been shared with a group of people and hopefully this challenge will be no different.
"It is a real pleasure to be able to raise funds which might change the lives of local children who need it most”
Around £50,000 will help the Bath Rugby Foundation to reach more disadvantaged young people in Bath and North East Somerset.
One in five children in Bath and North East Somerset lives in poverty. Next year, the Foundation will be going in to every school in the area to deliver character building classroom sessions inspired by the values of rugby.
