British Indoor Championships Yield Silver and Gold for Team Bath
Team Bath based athletes were quick to impress at the recent British Indoor Championships in Sheffield, scooping golf and silver medals during an action packed day.
Andrew Pozzi produced a terrific run to get the better of a 60m hurdles field packed with University of Bath-based athletes past and present at the 2016 Indoor British Championships in Sheffield.
The 23-year-old, part of Malcolm Arnold’s training group at the Sports Training Village, secured his place in the Great Britain & NI World Indoor Championships team by winning gold in 7.61.
Two University of Bath graduates were hot on his heels – Lawrence Clarke, Pozzi’s former training partner, took silver in 7.65 and David King was fourth in 7.76, five-hundredths of a second behind David Omeregie. King is coached at the STV by James Hillier.
Pozzi was appearing at only his third championships in two years after a succession of injury problems and was pleased to produce a winning performance.
“That one was really hard for me, just in terms of preparation, so I am absolutely delighted,” Pozzi told British Athletics.
“I knew that Lawrence and the two Davids were going to be really strong. To run a respectable time is even better.
“It is nice to be back after injury and it makes you appreciate it so much more. It means a lot to me.”
Andy Robertson, who is coached by Dan Cossins at the STV, came within one-hundredth of a second of emulating Pozzi’s gold medal after a storming performance in the 60m final.
He flew out of the blocks and led for much of the race before being pipped on the line by James Dasaulo. Robertson’s time of 6.54 was a new personal best.
University of Bath student Cameron Chalmers followed up his gold-medal success at the previous week’s BUCS Nationals by winning 400m silver in 48.05, dipping on the line to beat Alex Boyce by two-hundredths of a second.
Jazmin Sawyers, who does some of her training at the University, took the women’s long jump title with a personal best of 6.67m.
