Burgess, who signed for Bath back in February 2014, was controversially selected for the England international side by Stuart Lancaster ahead of the rugby World Cup, after making his debut for the red rose in August.
Despite playing as flanker for Bath, Burgess was deployed as centre for Lancaster's side, taking the place of the established Luther Burrell.
Ford admitted earlier in the week that Burgess had returned to training following the World Cup, but did not feel completely right and required a spell of time away from the game.
Ford now expects Burgess to return to the rec on November 2, ready to help Bath kick on with their season.
Speaking to BBC Radio 4 Ford said: "This is the time that he becomes a better rugby union player."
Burgess had been heavily linked with a return to the NRL and his previous club South Sydney Rabbitohs, where both his brothers George and Tom currently ply their trade.
Burgess formed a deep affinity with the club and, in his final game for the Sydney outfit, played on with a broken cheekbone to help Rabbitohs win the NRL Grand Final, becoming the first non-Australian to win the Clive Churchill medal as man of the match along the way.
With aims to feature for England in next year's Six Nations Championship, Burgess is expected to honour his Bath contract which runs until June 2017.
In his conversation with the BBC, Ford added: "I've spoken to Sam many times and we've spoken about coming back to Bath, rolling his sleeves up and playing [at number] six for us.
