Charlie Ewels extends contract with Bath Rugby

Bath Rugby have this week confirmed exciting young prospect Charlie Ewels has extended his contract with the club. Ewels caught the eye during the 2016/16 season and the Blue, Black and White have moved quickly to secure the second row for the immediate future.

Ewels, a product of the Bath Rugby Academy, made his first senior appearance at just 19 years of age, impressing in the European Rugby Champions Cup tie against Glasgow Warriors in 2014/15.

Ewels made the step up from Academy to first team over the summer of 2015, when he captained the England U20s to the runners-up spot in the World Rugby U20 Championship Final. The youngster had already played a key role in the title-winning team a year previous.

“Extending Charlie’s stay with us is a very positive move,” said Toby Booth, First Team Coach.

“He’s a top-quality player with a big future ahead of him, and he is an important part of our long-term plans here at Bath.

"He’s fronted up repeatedly for us in the pack, often against much older and more experienced players, and the fact that he has captained our first team as a teenager is testament to his leadership qualities.”

“I know that I’ve still got things to accomplish here with Bath, so it didn’t take long for me to make my decision,” Ewels said.

“I’ve got a big summer ahead of me with the England Saxons, then I can’t wait to get back into pre-season with Bath and gearing up for the new season.”

Selected for the Saxons squad for their two-match tour of South Africa, the 21-year-old made a winning start last Friday against South Africa ‘A’, partnered by Club teammate Dave Attwood in the second row.
