Debut Delight For Team Bath's Jenny Nesbitt In Euro Champs

University of Bath sporting scholar Jenny Nesbitt enjoyed a golden debut at the European Cross-Country Championships in France, as she helped Great Britain’s U23 women to team success.

The 20-year-old Sports & Social Science student, who is supported by a Trendell Sports Scholarship, finished a fine 13th in the individual rankings in Hyeres on Sunday.

She was the third-fastest Brit, behind Laura Muir in fourth and Madelaine Murray in tenth. Rebecca Murray was 14th, Beth Hawling 21st and Calli Thackery 25th as GB claimed the first team gold of the day - and Britain’s 50th in the history of the Championships.

A delighted Nesbitt posted on Instagram: “Totally smashed it with these girls today – gold medalists and the best in Europe! The most amazing experience and an individual 13th place [in my] first year U23 rounds off a pretty awesome weekend in France.”

Team-mate Muir added: “I’m really proud of the girls, they all ran really great. It’s a team effort as much as individual at these Championships, so I’m chuffed for them all to get the gold.”

Neil Black, the British Athletics Performance Director, said: “It has been another encouraging European Cross Country Championships for our athletes. It’s pleasing to see every member of the team win a medal and finish top of the medal table for the 13th consecutive year.”
