Double Gold & Five Medals For Bath Swimmers in Belgium

University of Bath-based swimmers hauled five medals, including two golds, at the Flanders Speedo Cup on the over weekend of January 23-24.

Sports Performance student Jay Lelliott caught the eye with a gold and silver medal in the 1500m freestyle and 400m freestyle respectively.

After falling just short behind GB rival James Guy in the 400m event on Saturday, Lelliott took revenge on Sunday with a thrilling display in which he finished 15 seconds ahead of second place.

Chemical Engineering graduate Andrew Willis built on his bronze medal at last month’s European Short-Course Championships by winning the 200m breaststroke event with a time of 2:14.13.

Two further medals were secured by Charlie Attwood, based at the University of Bath’s National Training Centre, who clinched bronze in both the 50m breaststroke and 100m breaststroke events.

Mechanical and Electrical Engineering student Miles Munro and the National Centre’s Joe Hulme also secured the quickest British times in their respective events – Munro finishing 5th in the 50m freestyle and Hulme 5th in the 200m medley and 6th in the 200m breaststroke.
