Finals mark start of big month of student sport at University of Bath
The first of two major student sporting events at the University of Bath during March saw teams from across the region contest the BUCS [British Universities & Colleges Sport] Western Conference Cup Finals this week.
Students from 15 universities and colleges in Wales and the South West of England competed in 12 different sports during an action-packed day on campus, with finals taking place in the Sports Training Village, the Founders’ Hall and the outdoor pitches.
There was plenty of success for the hosts to enjoy and a couple of all-Bath finals, including the netball which saw the 2nds run out 59-30 winners over the 3rds. The men’s hockey final was another Blue and Gold affair, with the 2nds edging out the 3rds 2-1.
An excellent week for the University’s rugby department continued as the women’s 1st XV and men’s 3rd XV both completed league and cup doubles, beating Marjons 50-0 and Cardiff 5ths 47-3 respectively.
On the badminton court, the Bath men’s 3rds overcame Swansea 1sts 6-2 to claim the cup but, in the London 2012 Legacy Pool, Bath men’s 2nds were beaten 10-5 by Plymouth 1sts in the water polo final. The women’s hockey 2nds were also edged out by UWE 1sts in their encounter.
Winners were also crowned in basketball, football, lacrosse, squash, table tennis, tennis and volleyball on the day.
The University of Bath will play host to thousands more student-athletes from across the country on March 21 and 22 when it stages BUCS Big Wednesday – the culmination of the student sporting season.
The much-anticipated event is part of the University’s 50th anniversary celebrations taking place throughout the 2016-17 academic year and will feature national finals in badminton, basketball, fencing, football, hockey, lacrosse, netball, rugby league, rugby union, squash, table tennis, tennis, volleyball and water polo.
