Great Britain defend European swimming crown with help from Bath Uni swimmers
University of Bath-based swimmers Chris Walker-Hebborn and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor helped Great Britain defend their European Championships mixed 4x100m medley relay title at the London Aquatics Centre this week.
The British Swimming National Centre Bath duo teamed up with Adam Peaty – fresh from winning the 100m breaststroke title – and Fran Halsall to win gold in 3.44.56 on Tuesday.
The same quartet won gold at the World Championships last year and their victory never looked in doubt after Walker-Hebborn established a good lead in the opening backstroke leg.
O’Connor, who swam the butterfly leg, said on Twitter: “Not many better feelings than winning gold in front of a home crowd in my favourite pool in the world. Amazing night.”
Walker-Hebborn and O’Connor are coached by Dave McNulty and Graeme Antwhistle in the London 2012 Legacy Pool.
They have been selected for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games along with Jazz Carlin and Andrew Willis, who are also competing at this week’s European Championships.
