MATCH REPORT: Sutton United 1-0 Bath City
After a 7-0 trouncing of Wellington in midweek, Bath City went into FA Trophy action against Sutton United confident, but lost 1-0.
It was hoped the Wellington thrashing would lift spirits over Twerton Park following a 3-1 loss at Welling but despite the lift, the Romans are left licking their wounds again due to Saturday's 1-0 defeat against Sutton.
Sutton, playing on the 3G surface that Bath City could never get used to, took the lead on the half-hour mark through Ben Jefford when his free-kick evaded every City defender and sailed into the back of the net to put the Vanarama National side ahead.
Despite Bath being a tier lower than their opponents, Nick McCootie had two great chances to get Bath level soon after the goal.
One opportunity went just wide and, not long after, when one-on-one with the Sutton United keeper, McCootie again scewed his shot just past the post.
Marvin Morgan did score for Bath in the second half but his effort was ruled out for offside but could not trouble the Sutton goal much more after that and United held on for the win to qualify for the next round.
Bath City are back in league action on Saturday when they make the trip to Sussex to play well-funded Whitehawk.
