Olympic Medallist to Join Bath Rugby Next Season
Olympic medallist Ruaridh McConnochie will join Bath Rugby next season, the Club is excited to announce.
The England 7s star, who won a silver Olympic medal with Team GB at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, will make the switch to the fifteen-man game after two seasons on the Sevens circuit.
Lightning-quick, powerful and agile, the versatile back had a superb debut sevens campaign, featuring in all but one of the tournaments on the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, before taking his place with Team GB on the podium in Rio.
Having started his rugby career with London Scottish, the 26-year-old had stints with Nuneaton, Hartpury College and New Zealand side Rangataua, before signing for England 7s in 2015. He has also represented England at Students and Counties level.
“We’re really excited about Ruaridh coming to Bath,” commented Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder. “He’s been outstanding on the Sevens circuit, and he brings a different set of experience with him that we think will be really beneficial. He’s got a great attitude that will fit in well and we’re looking forward to seeing that transfer in to the fifteen-man version.”
McConnochie added: “I’ve had a very enjoyable couple of seasons playing sevens with England and I’m really thankful for the opportunities they have given me. Looking ahead, I’m very excited to be getting back to 15s and feel that Bath is the best place to help me make that transition with the focus they put on developing players as individuals as well as for the benefit of the team. There’s a very talented squad at the Club, and I’m eager to join up with them in pre-season and get to work.”
