Team Bath's Andrew Pozzi qualifies for 110m hurdle semi-final

Andrew Pozzi of Team Bath booked his place in tomorrow's 110m hurdle semi-finals after finishing second in his round one heat.

He qualified with a time of 13.5 seconds, finishing below Dmitri Bascou of France, but pushed Jamaica's Andrew Riley and Brazilian Joao Vitor de Oliveira into third and fourth respectively.

Pozzi battled tough, rainy conditions in Rio, which almost threatened to postpone the race, to finish in the top four and secure his spot, which is already one stage further than he managed in London four years ago at his home Olympics.

The Stratford-born hurdler qualified with relative ease, despite a brief nervous moment when he knocked the second-to-last hurdle.

Speaking post-race, Pozzi told the BBC: "Yeah I think I just went into recovery mode (after hitting the late hurdle). I made a stupid mistake and you can't afford to do that here.

"I hit it hard, gave it everything I could and made sure I qualified and thankfully I did so we can rectify it tomorrow.

"I've come into this in the best shape of my life and it's just about doing it when it matters now."

Pozzi's semi-final will be at around 20 to one tomorrow morning, and the final, if he makes it, will be at quarter to three the same day.
