Team Bath's Nick Bell smashes GB rowing team trials

University of Bath sporting scholar Nick Bell was the fastest student sculler at this week’s GB Rowing Team Trials for the World Senior, u23 and University Championships.

The Sport & Exercise Science student finished fourth in the B Final and tenth overall in a strong men’s single scull competition at GB’s national training centre in Caversham.

Bell, supported by a Goldsmith Sporting Scholarship, is coached by Dan Harris at the GB Rowing Team Start centre based at the Sports Training Village and Minerva Bath RC.

He is a former footballer who switched to rowing after successfully trialing for the talent ID and development programme in 2013.

Two Bath Start graduates who completed their studies at the University of Bath last summer were also in action.

Economics graduate Frazier Christie produced a battling semi-final performance to book his place in the A Final, where he finished fifth overall.

Sport & Exercise Science graduate Sam Courty, a medalist at the last two World U23 Championships, also reached the A Final in the women’s single as she finished sixth overall.

This week’s Trials will help shape the GB team for the World Senior and U23 Championships, taking place in Rotterdam, the Netherlands in August, as well as September’s FISU World University Championships in Poznan, Poland.
