Two Promising Backs Sign with Bath Rugby

Two exciting, young English talents have joined Bath Rugby, with Max Green and Max Wright moving south from Yorkshire Carnegie.

An intelligent, dynamic scrum-half, Green, 21, broke into the starting line-up for Carnegie in the 2015-16 season, earning a regular starting spot the following year. He then went on to cement his place in the England U20s squad for the 2016 Junior World Championship in Manchester, where he teamed up with future Bath teammates Jack Walker, Zach Mercer and Darren Atkins.

Agile centre Wright, 20, also gained recognition in the 2016-17 season and quickly showed his promise, with two tries in 12 appearances for the Championship side. He replicated that form for the England U20s, joining the squad who went on to take the title in 2016. Wright was also part of the U20s squad who won the Grand Slam in 2017, alongside Mercer and Josh Bayliss, and represented his country this summer in Georgia.

“We’re both really excited to have come down to Bath,” said Max Green. “It’s an amazing place to work and train every day, and we’re getting the opportunity to learn from some of the best players in the game. There’s a really clear emphasis at the Club on developing players and giving us younger lads the chance to play, and that is hugely important to us both.”

Max Wright added: “It’s great to be part of an environment that will give game time and experience to players at the start of their careers, as well as looking to help us mature off the pitch, and I’ve no doubt that will accelerate our learning in all aspects.”

“Max and Max have been with us for a few weeks now, and they are both good characters who have settled in really well,” added Director of Rugby, Todd Blackadder. “They’re very exciting young players who have a lot of promise, and will learn a lot from the likes of Kahn Fotuali'i and Jonathan Joseph.

“We want to evolve the squad so that it combines excellent, promising young talent with experienced world-class players - you can see this in the forwards at the moment, with the likes of Jack Walker and Zach Mercer playing and training alongside Taulupe Faletau and Francois Louw.

“The work to ensure the emergence of local talent through our own pathway is ongoing, and building the strength of the squad to allow the young players in our region to mature is a key factor. I’m really looking forward to seeing both young men continue to progress and be a part of our future.”
