World Cup Daily: September 24 Preview
Total Sport places day five of the Rugby World Cup under the magnifying glass with our daily digest, as reigning champions New Zealand face minnows Namibia...
Today at the World Cup
After brushing aside Argentina, the All Blacks come up against Namibia on Thursday, a team who are yet to introduce themselves in this year's tournament and are perceived, in the eyes of many, as the potential whippings boys of the World Cup.
Despite not exerting themselves too much against Argentina, the All Blacks will still approach Namibia with experienced caution.
They only need to look to South Africa's demise at the hands of Japan last week, to realise the rugby World Cup can throw upsets onto the table at any given opportunity.
While a defeat for the New Zealanders seems borderline impossible, any form of resistance from the Namibians in the Olympic Stadium is likely to capture the attention of the rugby World.
Who to watch
Whenever New Zealand are in action, perhaps it's better to question who not to watch? With a plethora of talent throughout their ranks, the regular names can be expected to step up to the plate as per usual.
In what is a big game for Beauden Barrett, the All Blacks fly half is charged with the responsibility and making things happen. Seen as the long term heir to Dan Carter, Barrett will be aiming to use this World Cup as a pedestal, and what better way than humiliating a lesser opponent?
Namibia however boast talent of their own, though it has to be said much more limited. Saracens' loose forward Jacques Burger will provide some threat for the African nation, though the task at hand for him and his side is a difficult one at best.
Where to watch
The Rec (Recreation Ground, Spring Gardens, BA2 4DS): Where better to watch the Rugby World Cup than from the city's undisputed home of rugby? The Rec will be broadcasting all of the tournaments early games on the big screen in the Red Bull Fanzone. Fans will ensure that The Rec is a hive of activity as the competition hots up.
When to watch
New Zealand vs Namibia kicks off at 8pm in the evening, broadcast live from the Olympic Stadium on ITV.
World Cup meal
New Zealand and Namibia, this could make for an interesting dish.
For starters, kick off with a seafood themed plate of Whitianga scallop. Scallops are found in abundance throughout New Zealand’s waters, and are celebrated at the Whitianga Scallop Festival every year in September - nice a timely.
For the main it has to be Nambian vension, meaning this platter is already shaping up to be a surf and turf affair. Namibians love their venison, usually served on skewers alongside traditional staples oshifima (maize porridge) or mahangu (pearl millet) and, of course, a hearty tankard or two of fine Namibian beer.
And to finish, the dessert plate must consist of some Kiwi - it would be sacrilege not too, right? Serve chopped segments of the national fruit alongside a dollop of Hokey pokey – a creamy vanilla ice cream strewn with pieces of honeycomb – it's the nation’s favourite.
Predictions
This tie has a New Zealand victory written all over it, and a big one at that. The two sides have never met before, and it could be a painful first encounter for the African nation.
The Kiwis could quite easily put this one to bed by over 25 points, it just depends how much fight the Namibians have in them on the big stage. Ladbrokes are fairly confident the All Blacks are going to clear up however, of which their best odds for the clash can be found
here.
